Reflection, whether in mind or in reality, nonetheless is our attitude toward this project. What we see on the river is a ‘stronghold’ with a special history. We tend to respect this through two reflections. Visitors are going to experience two visions on the water that reflects what’s originally in the sky.
The first reflection is a new building that lies on the river, aligning with the former citywall. Respecting the rationalistic genius of the heritage, we take the module and scale as the framework, and fill it with new materials and programme. The roof and façade are mostly transparent both to display the beauty of the structure and to construct a perfect angle to admire the old building from the new one.
The second reflection is a new set of programme. We first restore the function of the heritage, making it a small flight club with its own workshop and maintenance area, only that now the aircrafts are not built for war but pleasure. This scene also gives visitors a chance to reflect on war and meaning of peaceful daily life. Then, we reflect the flight programme on the water, putting a new canoe club in the new building. It’s a sports-centre during the day and turns to a nightclub in the evening. The ample space mirrored from the old building allow such flexibility to exist.
Overall, it’s a new commune hub with special complex programme that fits the specialty of the heritage, and the local needs.

Welcome, to this ‘not all new’ AEROREA CLUB OF SPORTS AND FUN!
Our club, like its name, is a set of mirroring reflection(see what we did there, eh?). You must have noticed on your way here that there are two buildings in identical size, right? It’s quite hard to miss.
– the old building-
We are now in the old half, the famous former Idroscalo hydroplane hangar. The heritage is quite unique in itself. How often do you see an airport on the river? The meaning of its former service is just too significant to go neglected and that is why we almost keep it in the old way.
Flying has long been a fashionable sport and nowaday more and more people are eager to trace a visitor’s guide to experience. On the first floor is our flight club with its own workshop and maintenance area. See the huge crane over there? It’s for the large parts of the seaplanes. You may just go over to the info stand, and we can get a small jet ready to fly in no time.
Not in the mood and just trying to relax? I assure you, building an aircraft is fun to watch. How about we get a cup of coffee and just waste some hours on the second floor? The workings scene and the river sight is the best match, as it was nearly a century ago in this exact same spot.
– the new building-
And here we are in the fresh new building. We just admire the old hangar so much that we take its module and structure as the framework, and fill it with a new passion.
People in Pavia has always been passionate about canoe, we even have one of the best canoe team in the world here. It’s a good old friendly sport that has a large fan basis here. Who would resist the call of the Ticino river.
As you can see, we have our canoe club on the first floor, with a gym area large enough for you to get ready, and when you are, just pick a canoe and go to the dock at the end of the building. See how it matches with airplane track in the old building?
On the second floor is our regular bar, just come over anytime when you’re up for a drink, or have a game to catch.
Finding it a little bit too healthy? Just wait till the evening when we put all the lights into use. Once all the gym facilities are tucked in, the whole building turns into a nightclub. Feeling down? Just come here and shake all your worries away and refresh…the next morning.
Feel free to enjoy this complex commune hub where you can definitely have a unique experience!
